Traction Engine (Forestry Equipment)

Traction Engine

The Traction Engine were the predecessor to today’s modern farm tractor, once used during the late 18th century. It is a self-propelled steam engine used to move heavy loads in forests, roads, plough ground or to provide power at a chosen location. They were also used as a transportable power source.

Stump Grinder (Forestry Equipment)

Stump Grinder

A stump grinder or stump cutter is a power tool or equipment attachment that removes tree stumps by means of a rotating cutting disk that chips away the wood.

Slasher (Forestry Equipment)

Slasher

A Slasher is an implement with a long sharp blade used to clear scrub. Its long handle, and the open face of its blade, lends it to use for clearing thin and dense low-lying bush where an axe would be too clumsy.

Tub Grinder (Forestry Equipment)

Tub Grinder

A tub grinder is a machine used in forestry to commute wood and waste. It is often used to clean up debris and waste wood at a landing site. If the wood is clean, however, then a chipper is often more efficient in accomplishing the same job.

Yarder (Forestry Equipment)

Yarder

A Yarder is piece of logging equipment which uses a system of cables to pull or fly logs from the stump to the landing. It generally consists of an engine, drums, and spar, but has a range of configurations and variations such as the Swing Yarder.

Shear (Forestry Equipment)

Shear

A shear or stump shear is a device used to cut up stumps at logging sites. The shear is usually mounted on an excavator base and, using grinding apparatus, reduces stumpage by cutting it down into more manageable sizes.

Mulcher (forestry Equipment)

Mulcher

A Mulcher is a piece of equipment used to break down organic matter into a fine composition. Mulchers can be used for dense brush, stumps, yard waste piles, logging scraps, and even whole trees. Mulchers are regularly used for landscaping, right-of-way maintenance, fighting forest fires, cutting recreational trails, golf course maintenance, and other vegetation management services.

Menzi Muck (Forestry Equipment)

Menzi Muck

Menzi Muck or Spider Excavator is a special type of all-terrain excavator. It was invented by Ernst Menzi and was first manufactured in 1966. None of the conventional construction machines available on the market at this time were suitable for difficult work on slopes.
The machine has the ability to work on very steep slopes (up to 70%) and in deep mud or water. The Menzi Muck is commonly used as forestry vehicle and in construction of canals or various multipurpose all-terrain works.

Mattock (Forestry Equipment)

Mattock

A mattock is a versatile hand tool, used for digging and chopping, similar to the pickaxe. It has a long handle, and a stout head, which combines an axe blade and an adze or a pick and an adze.

Log Truck (Forestry Equipment)

Log Truck

A log truck or timber lorry  is a large truck used to carry logs. They are used to carry logs long distances. Their length and power facilitate the quick and efficient transport of heavy logs of a variety of sizes. Their invention has transformed the logging industry and different features have assured that loggers are no longer restricted to bore logs near water sources for easy transportation, nor are they restricted to working in just the summer months.

Log Loader (Forestry Equipment)

Log Loader

A log loader is a machine used to load and unload timber from log transportation vehicles and storage piles. While some log loaders are made specifically for loading tasks, others are derived from hydraulic excavators. The purpose-built types are advantageous as they include cabs that can tilt and adjust upright while the loader is traveling on a slope.

Knuckleboom Loader (Forestry Equipment)

Knuckleboom Loader

A Knuckleboom loader is a type of loader that features a hydraulically-operated loading boom. The mechanical action of the boom imitates the movement of a human arm as it is pin-jointed in the the middle or at the elbow of the boom. Knuckleboom loaders are commonly used for logging applications.

Forwarder (Forestry Equipment)

Forwarder

A forwarder is a forestry vehicle used to gather, load, and carry pre-cut logs to a loading area for larger trucks to haul. It is a six- to eight-wheel articulated all-wheel drive machine equipped with a hydraulic loader and timber grapple to load the logs onto its trailer, or bunk.

It carries big felled logs from the stump to a roadside landing. Unlike a skidder, a forwarder carries logs clear of the ground, which can reduce soil impacts but tends to limit the size of the logs it can move. Forwarders are typically employed together with harvesters in cut-to-length logging operations

Feller Buncher (Forestry Equipment)

Feller Buncher

A feller buncher is a type of harvester used in logging. It is a motorized vehicle with an attachment that can rapidly cut and gather several trees before felling them. It is a dual-function machine that has come to replace the work done by lumberjacks or fallers, namely falling and piling trees into bunches. In terms of production, feller bunchers can fall and bunch as much as 200 trees per hour, a rate that could never be matched manually.

Debarker (Forestry Equipment)

Debarker

A debarker is a machine used to strip or remove bark from logs before processing. Debarking refers to the process of using machines to strip or remove bark. Debarking is considered a part of normal sawmill operations. A more recent trend however is the debarking of logs at an actual logging site before they even reach a saw or pulp mill. This has led to the development of portable debarking units such as flail ring debarkers. One of the primary reasons for debarking is to minimize the amount of fibre loss from logs.

Chipper (Forestry Equipment)

A tree Chipper or Woodchipper is a machine used to chip whole trees, branches, debris, mulch, and other types of foliage. Chippers range in size from smaller hand-fed units used in domestic and agricultural applications to mobile, whole-tree chippers used to chip slash and residue in commercial, logging, and forestry operations.

Chainsaw (Forestry Equipment)

Chainsaw

A chainsaw is a type of saw used mostly in the logging industry to fell trees. The cutting apparatus, or teeth, on a chainsaw are positioned on an endless chain that is pulled around a bar at a high speed. Chainsaws are powered by gasoline or a hydraulic or electric motor.

Skidder (Forestry Equipment)

A Skidder is a type of heavy vehicle used in a logging operation for pulling cut trees out of a forest in a process called "skidding", in which the logs are transported from the cutting site to a landing.

Cable Skidder

A cable skidder is a type of log skidder used in forestry that employs a main winch cable and choker set to assemble and hold a load of logs. A cable skidder is more versatile than a grapple skidder because the operator can pull the cable up to reach the logs the machine can't otherwise directly access or drive up to.

Grapple skidders

Grapple skidders  use grapples, a hydraulic claw-like attachment, to grasp logs. They are usually good for covering longer distances. Grapple skidders can have a hydraulic claw instead of a winch, or they can have a secondary hydraulic system that allows it to lift the claw to the rear of the machine as well as the lowering motion. Some skidders can even swing the trees from side to side.

Brush Cutter (Forestry Equipment)

A Brush Cutter is a hydraulically-powered attachment used in forestry or municipal applications that features a multi-toothed cutting wheel. The cutting wheel turns at a high rate of speed and, in the process, grinds down through trees and brush. It can be used to reduce branches, foliage and other unmarketable forest byproducts into mulch and chips or as a vegetation management tool for clearing away trees and other types of foliage from the sides of highways.

Harvester (Forestry Equipment)

A harvester is a type of self-propelled heavy forestry vehicle machine with a cutting head attachment that is capable of felling and processing stems employed in cut-to-length logging operations for felling, delimbing, and bucking a tree to desired lengths.

It is typically employed together with a forwarder that hauls the logs to a roadside landing.

The machine, powered by
a diesel engine, is all wheeldrive and fitted with a
hydraulic loader onto which is mounted a harvester
head. This is equipped with a chain saw to fell the
tree and cut the log into lengths, feed rollers to move
the tree through the head, knives to remove branches
and a device to measure the length of the logs.
